My husband and I know James for more than a decade. We are still in shock to process his passing, as we just found out about it today through a mutual friend. James called us every Sunday to say hello. He did not call us or return our call one Sunday (about 3 weeks ago), which was very unusual (as he never missed a call), but the idea of him passing so suddenly never occurred to us. We will visit him in Virginia in the near future to say hello. He was always kind to us, making sure we were okay. When we were new to the US as students attending the U of A, he took us under his wings, often taking us for dinner, inviting us over for a little chat, and showing things around in town. He (and his Sunday calls) will greatly be missed...

I just found out today that he has passed on. The idea of him passing on so quickly and so suddenly did not occur to me until a friend of mine told me about his passing. He always called us every Sunday to just say hello. He always ended our conversation by saying, "I hope we will talk again next Sunday." It was always very brief, but he always asked us if everybody was doing okay. My husband and I have known him from Fayetteville for more than 10 years. Even after we moved out of the state, we always kept in touch. He always sent us a little gift for Christmas, and we did the same for years. I was touched by reading some messages here that he has done the same to many others. When my husband and I were new to the US years ago, he took us under his wings; he often took us for dinner and always made sure that we were okay. I am very sad and still in shock to process his passing, but knowing that he is with his beloved dogs (I remember Kate and Rody) warms my heart. He (and his Sunday calls) will greatly be missed....

Dr. Chase was more than a professor; he was my second father, but acted and treated me like his own son. I remember him calling me into his office in Old Main my Jr. year. He basically was telling me to get my act together because he saw potential in me. I'm about to begin my 20th year teaching in public school, and I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to Dr. Chase because I wasn't even thinking about teaching until I walked out of his office that day. I wanted to make an impact on the lives of school aged children; he was definitely a catalyst to my career. Furthermore, Dr. Chase and I continued our relationship up until his passing; we'd talk on the phone at least once a week. I knew he wasn't doing well but he still wanted to hear my voice and I wanted to hear his as well. By the grace of GOD, James Chase became my father in word and deed, sending me birthday gifts yearly and I am forever grateful. Fatefully, we shared the same birthday, July 2, as well. GOD BLESS and rest well my dad... Dr. James Chase.

Two "fun" things I will always remember about Jim. 1981 Vickie, David Sloan and I arrived at Jim's house at 4:30 A.M to watch the wedding of Lady Diana and Prince Charles. We were greeted with champagne and petit fours. It was a Jim original.The other memory lasted almost 12 years.. I don't know which of us was crazier about dogs. But when the Westminister dog show came around, Jim would call me and we had a two hour discussion as the dogs were shown. The second night was my turn to call. We never agreed about the winner but it was something I looked forward to each year. We seemed to pick up just where we had left off the year before. I miss him!

I've known Dr. Chase my whole life. He was my dad's professor and afterwards became a close friend and father figure to him. Even when my parents divorced Dr. Chase would still invite my mom and sister over for his yearly christmas parties and for visits. He wasalways very kind, had some kind of history lesson for my dad and him to discuss, and absolutely loved his dogs. He will be missed by the entire Martinez family.
