Mary Pinkerton was my 8th grade science teacher. And a great one. She had a bemused, louche charm and operated with a sly sense of humor. It made the science engaging and interesting. Years later, through mutual friends (her daughter Jennifer and my brother John were friends), I got to attend her Christmas parties, which were great fun and lively in spirit. Mary was an old soul, a doer and a strong character who saw the humor and beauty in life. She made an impression on me and I will always remember her well. A woman of substance and character, a cool lady. Farewell Mary: you did life well.

My sincere condolences for your loss. Mary was my 8th grade science teacher. She cut a relaxed, louche figure and let us be ourselves, seemingly unruffled by anything. She was a fantastic spirit and loved the natural world and people’s authenticity. In later years, I joined her holiday parties and saw the same relaxed, woman living life on her own terms and celebrating it with others. She was an exceptional individual who lived life her way and contributed a great deal in her teaching career, and in horticulture in her later years. She was one of a kind and I will always remember her fondly.

I will miss Aunt Mary very much. I will treasure the memory of watching the tennis match with her while I rested with a cold sprite after pulling weeds in her garden. Her yelling at the TV and then telling me who it was and explaining the game to me between calling them a "bonehead". I loved her feisty spirit and how hard she worked, like all the women in our family. She was strong and not afraid to tell you how she felt or what she thought. I'll remember the funny stories that her sister Martha (my grandmother) told about them from when they were kids. Country strong, farm girls getting up at 4am to milk cows before school. Their poor dad having to chase off boys because they were all so beautiful. Rest in Peace, Aunt Mary. We love you.
