I am one of the many PhD students that Jim mentored at the U of A. He was determined to provide us with the tools to become effective in our work in higher education. If you were fortunate enough to be accepted into his care, it meant a that a great deal of effort would be required of you to succeed in fulfilling the requirements to obtain the PhD degree. He instilled in us the understanding that we had to be both excellent teachers and researchers. Many of the students that Jim took onboard were international students, and Jim took great interest in their lives and wellbeing during the period of time that they were under his care to ensure that they would complete the degree requirements. He was a great mentor, and his care did not end when the degree was received, as he continued to provide support when needed in order for us to advance at our institutions.
Jim and Jeanette have been a part of my life since those days in the PhD program, and I wish to offer Jeanette and the family my condolences on the passing of this great and wonderful man whom I will miss so much...his kindness, humor, and probing mind. RIP, Jim, you have given enough.
