To Country and To FriendsIt was the long-awaited day--the day our lifelong dream would be fulfilled. We were going to Fort Smith to take the oath of allegiance and become US citizens. Having our dear friends, Bill and Meredith, accompany us, and being able to share our joy with them completed the experience. What we didn't expect was the royal treatment they lavished on us. It started when we left the house to find their car in our driveway (even though we live right next door to each other). They placed patriotic red, white, and blue star beads around our necks and then held open the car doors for us to enter and begin our chauffeured journey to Fort Smith. That is when we realized how blessed we were, not only to become American citizens, but to be honored on our special day by such loving friends.
There is a beautiful memory still fresh in my mind. A couple of years ago, Craig and I were at Winefest with Bill and Meredith. Under the big top were rows of tables where people were enjoying the food, wine and entertainment. Musicians and singers dressed in traditional Bavarian clothing filled the room with lively, happy music. That's when it happened. Bill quietly rose from his seat and gently reached out his hand to Meredith. She gracefully placed her hand in his and rose to meet him. He put his arm around her, and they danced right there by the table. While they danced, she looked up at him with trust and adoration, as he gazed on her in such a tender, loving way. It was one of those moments rarely captured in busy lives, that moment when everything around seems to fade away because something really special is happening.
