Dr Mae B. Nettleship's Obituary
Dr. Mae B. Nettleship, 83 of Fayetteville, AR passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009 in Fayetteville, AR. She was born March 10, 1926 in Windsor Ontario, Canada to Edward George Banwell, and Jessie Reycroft Watson.
For 40 years, Dr. Nettleship worked to improve medicine and surgical pathology in Northwest Arkansas. She created an environment to encourage students in the study of medicine and related health fields.
A board-certified pathologist, Nettleship trained as a Medical Technologist in Detroit Michigan, obtained a B-SC at the University of Arkansas, worked as a Medical Technologist in Little Rock, and then obtained her MD degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, graduating in 1955. She was the retired medical director of laboratories at Washington Regional Medical Center and Fayetteville City Hospital. She and her late husband, Dr. Anderson Nettleship, founded ANL Laboratory setting a level of excellence in the region.
For 18 years they provided an environment to encourage high school and college students in the study of medicine and health-related fields by creating a summer fellowship program and a school of medical technology. Graduates of the program can be found throughout Arkansas and the United States. Continuing their support of education the Nettleships founded The New School in 1971 for excellence in childhood education.
Dr. Nettleship’s volunteer work included 20 years with the American Red Cross as the Washington County blood services committee medical advisor, Washington County chapter chair and American National Red Cross regional medical advisory committee member, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Vestry, Arts Live, Life Styles, Butterfield Trail Village board, Free Health Care Clinic board, and Washington Regional Medical Center board.
Dr. Nettleship was the first female Rotarian in the State of Arkansas, and a Paul Harris Fellow. She was a recipient of The Washington Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Eagle Award in 1998. A Charter Member of the Society of the Double Helix, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In 2002 she established the Drs. Mae and Anderson Nettleship Endowed Chair in Oncologic Pathology at The University of Arkansas Medical School.
She was a well-known breeder of Tennessee Walking Horses, and was instrumental in setting up support for the Dorothy E. King Equine Program at the University of Arkansas and the namesake of the Nettleship Society for excellence in Equine Education.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Anderson Nettleship and a committed companion Robert B. Alexander.
She is survived by two children; Anderson Nettleship of West Fork, AR, Susan Bailey of Fayetteville, AR, one step son; William Nettleship of Placentia, CA, four grandchildren; Alissa Nettleship, Andy Nettleship, Trey Bailey, Davis Bailey, and two step grandchildren; Elizabeth Nettleship, and Anna Nettleship.
Memorial services will be held 10:00am, on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Father Lowell Grisham officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fayetteville.
