Calvin Bernard Davis' Obituary
Calvin Bernard Davis, 51, of Springdale, AR, A former Arkansas Razorback alumnus and 1996 Olympic bronze medalist, departed this life on Monday, May 1, 2023, in Springdale, AR. Calvin, affectionately called “Wolf” was born April 2, 1972, in Eutaw, AL to Dwayne Jerome Nash Sr. and Helen Davis. Calvin was predeceased by his Father Dwayne Jerome Nash Sr., brother Dwayne Jerome Nash Jr, Nephew David E. Steward Jr., Grandparents W.K. Davis, and Marina (Hardy) Davis.
Calvin grew up in Boston, MA and attended Dorchester High School in Boston. At DHS he made a name for himself in both track and football. Calvin still holds Dorchester High School track and field records for the 200m at 21.6, the 300-yard at 31.2 and the 400m at 47.7. He also was an outstanding football player. In his senior year, the DHS Football team played in the Super Bowl. Calvin scored the winning touchdown that clinched the Super bowl. He was also chosen to play in the prestigious Shriners Game and caught two touchdown passes.
Calvin was heavily recruited out of high school, and after a brief stint in Junior College, where he became a NJCC 400 meter Champion, he eventually made his way to the University of Arkansas.
Calvin competed collegiately for the University of Arkansas, primarily as a 400 meter sprinter, not learning the hurdles until later. As a Razorback, he was a part of four SEC and four NCAA team titles from 1993-1994. The 1994 NCAA Outdoors 400 meter Champion, 1993 NCAA Indoor 400 meter Champion and a member of the NCAA Distance 1994 Indoor Distance Medley Championship team, six All-American honors, and a Two-time SEC 400 meter Indoor Champion. He earned a host of accolades and honor throughout his Razorback journey.
He was a member of the USA 4 X 400m Gold Medal relay team during the 1995 World indoor Championships held in Barcelona, Spain.
In 2013, he was inducted into the University Of Arkansas Sports Hall Of Honor.
During the 1996 United States Olympic Trials/Championship, Calvin earned a spot on the USA Olympic team by finishing third in the 400m hurdles final. During the 1996 Summer Olympics, Calvin proudly competed for the USA, where he won the Bronze Medal in the 400 meter hurdles. He competed several years on the international Track & Field circuit representing the USA, Adidias and Nike, earning USA and World ranking honors and competing on several USA national teams.
On June 11, 2021, Calvin was inducted into the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame.
Calvin was employed at Har-Ber High School, in Springdale Arkansas as an Instructional Aide in the Special Education Department and a volunteer Track & Field Coach. He was the CEO/Coach of his TOP GUN AAU Track Club, where several of his athletes competed in Regional and National competition. He was also a member of the Arkansas Athletic Association Certified Official in both Football and Basketball. Calvin had a great sense of humor and he loved to play harmless but funny pranks on friends and family. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Walter and Bessie Nash.
Calvin had such a big life and touched so many people. Hall of Fayetteville, AR, five sisters, Latanya Davis, of West Roxbury, MA, Manisha Davis of Hyde Park, MA, Kimberly Nash of Bessmer, AL, Laquita Nash-Heard(Brandon) of McCalla, AL, Tameka Nash-McGuire(DeMarcus) of Forest Oaks, AL, two brothers, Derek Davis of Hyde Park, Ma, James Nash Sr(Jessica) of McCalla, AL, and seven grandchildren, Zahmihya, Alonna, Kimber, Kamaris, Tavaris Jr, Naomi, and Chase, 4 aunts, Rebecca Rice of Boston, MA, Linda Crawford of Eutaw, AL, Evelyn Bruce of McCalla, AL, Juanita Cherry, from Eutaw, AL, three uncles, Richard Lee Davis of Cleveland, Ohio, Earl Davis of Boston, MA, and Jessie Davis of Boston, MA.
He will be forever remembered by a host of Nieces, Nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 20th at Christian Life Cathedral in Fayetteville. The Repass/Fellowship dinner will be immediately following the services. Please join the family immediately following services and share stories of laughter and fund memories of Calvin.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Razorback Foundation in honor of Calvin Davis.
