Carol Clara Shearer's Obituary
Carol Clara (Born) Shearer, 100 years of age, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, February 22, 2020, in her apartment at Peachtree Village in Farmington. Her parents, William Theodore Born, a school principal in Chicago, and Margarethe Born welcomed Carol into this life on August 29, 1919, in Oak Park, Illinois. Carol married in the early 1940’s and had three children. She is preceded in death by her twin daughters, Lynn and Claudia.
She was a graduate of Oak Park High School and attended both the University of Tulsa and Moser Business College of Chicago.
A long-time resident of Fayetteville and employee of the University of Arkansas, she moved to Arkansas in 1967 with her young son whom she raised as a single mother.
She is survived by her son, Robert Shearer of Los Angeles, California; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Prior to settling in Fayetteville, Ms. Shearer lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Baltimore, Maryland; Wheaton and Urbana-Champaign, Illinois; and Vestal, New York. Her Fayetteville church home of many years was University Baptist. She became a resident of Peachtree Village thirteen years ago where she easily became acquainted with and made allies of staff.
During her working career at The University of Arkansas, Carol performed office and clerical tasks for Holcomb Hall and the Brough Commons Dining Center, where she was instrumental in the interior design and decorating of the dining area. Over the course of three decades with the University of Arkansas Food Service, she formed lasting friendships with other talented, like-minded women through shared delights and demands of dining hall dynamics.
The wonder of the natural world was a life-long source of inspiration. Carol joined the Ozark Society (ozarksociety.net) soon after her arrival to Northwest Arkansas. She cherished all moments outdoors, enjoyed walks at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, hiking in Devil’s Den State Park, canoeing the Buffalo River and boating on Lake Wedington.
She had a fantastic memory of historic dates, places and events including details about family members and friends she loved.
In keeping with her request, a funeral service will not be held. Contributions to The Ozark Society (ozarksociety.net) may be made in Carol’s honor.
