Dennis Alvin Weeden's Obituary
Dennis Alvin Weeden was born on April 28, 1939, to Al and Edna Weeden in Galesburg, Illinois. He peacefully passed away on July 21 in Rogers, Ark. Dennis’s love of the outdoors began early in his childhood while hunting and fishing with his 90-year-old grandfather in Clinton, Iowa. In high school, he played basketball and started water skiing on the Mississippi river and one summer built a ski jump. Dennis had a desire to go and do things that had not been done before.
After marrying Nancy Nelson in 1961, they headed to Eugene, OR in a travel trailer where they had 2 children 15 months apart. He got his masters in geology there and immediately started doing field work in Alaska where at the time no oil had been found. His first job with Texaco took them next to California where their 3rd child was born in 1967. His work then took him and his family to England, New York, Oklahoma and finally Corpus Christi. He and Nancy made south Texas home for 30 years before health problems brought them and their dog Belle closer to family in Northwest Arkansas.
Dennis had a legacy of being very generous as well as helping young men see their calling and encouraging them to “do what they were created for”. When asked about a year ago what he would do today if he was young again, he quickly said “probably go to space”.
Dennis is survived by his sister Judy Martin (Ted), Spokane, WA, three children; Anna Weeden, San Antonio, TX, Dan Weeden (Sue) of Rogers, Ark. and Joseph Weeden (Jane) San Antonio, TX as well as four grandchildren; Sarah Wiley (Garrett), Matt Weeden (Katherine), Emily Bubbus (Seth) and Joshua Weeden (Eva) and seven great-grandchildren.
Dennis’s family would like to thank the special staff at Primrose Retirement Community in Rogers who cared for him so well the last 3 years. A memorial service at the Primrose Retirement center clubhouse for Dennis (AKA Dennis the Menace) will be on August 22nd at 3 pm.
