Dorothy Maria Mitchelson's Obituary
Dorothy Mitchelson, age 89, a beloved mother and cherished member of the Butterfield Trail Village community, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, after a life defined by resilience, compassion, and grace.
Born in Europe during a time of profound unrest, Dorothy endured unimaginable hardship as a child. During World War II, she and her mother were captured while attempting to flee Nazi Germany and were sent to Dachau, where they remained until the camp’s liberation in 1945. In the years that followed, she lived in displaced persons camps before immigrating to the United States in 1952, beginning a new chapter marked by hope and opportunity.
She graduated from high school in New York and served in the U.S. Air Force, where she met her husband, Stu Mitchelson. They married on June 11, 1960, and raised three children — Gary, Dana, and Tracy. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Stu Mitchelson.
In later years, Dorothy moved to Northwest Arkansas to be near family. She became a resident of Butterfield Trail Village, where she found joy and community. Dorothy will be remembered for her quiet strength, optimism, and dedication to paying forward the kindness she received throughout her life. She is survived by her children, extended family, and many friends whose lives she touched.
Her life stands as a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Fisher House Foundation, Willard Walker Hospice Home or Humane Society of your choice.
There will be a Memorial Service for Dorothy at Butterfield Trail Village, announced at a later date.
