Dr. Ernst Erwin Seifen's Obituary
Dr. Ernst Erwin Seifen, most recently of Fayetteville, AR, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 10, 2019. He was 89. Ernst was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Astride. Dr. Seifen was born and raised in Germany, the youngest of three boys and the last surviving son of Hubertus and Ida (nee Immish) Seifen.
He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich and went on to earn a Doctorate in Pharmacology. He was unable to practice medicine because of progressive blindness (retinitis pigmentosa) diagnosed while in medical school. The family moved to the United States, where he went on to become a well-respected Faculty member of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Department of Pharmacology. He and Astride retired in Brookline, MA, where they were often seen walking along Harvard Avenue.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Seifen Ameringer and her husband Kurt Ameringer; daughter, Dorothee Seifen Mecum, her husband Gideon Mecum and grandson Benjamin Mecum; and son Nicolaus Seifen, partner Douglas Kent, and grandchildren Annalise, Elijah, Joshua and Aaron Seifen. We will miss him terribly.
The family will hold a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ernst Seifen’s name to the Foundation Fighting Blindness (https://give.fightingblindness.org/fundraiser/2533873).
