Dear Martha and Family,
Ed was the most gifted practioner of empathetic understanding I have ever known. His passion for psychology, spirituality and the psyche was contagious and delightful. Like yours, Ed's compassion and kindness were immediately apparent, and people wanted to be around him. He was a grounding force in our men's group, and everyone knew he was a Great Spirit and wise man. It was an honor and enriching pleasure to know him.

I studied English literature under Dr. McClain at Hardin-Simmons University in the 1950?s. Studying and working with him was a life-changing experience for me. His ?lectures? generally consisted of a series of questions about the psychological/ethical/religious implications of key literary passages. Our answers were met with a ?Yes! Go on!? or with another question to lead us deeper into the topic of discussion. I was drawn into literature by Dr. McClain?s love of it and by his teaching methodology. I became a literature teacher myself.
Dr. McClain?s memory and influence lives on in my life and I?m sure in the lives of many other students.

I've thought of Ed often since leaving Fayetteville. So appreciated his gentle,intelligent way of leading and teaching.
