Elizabeth Gordon Sample Trickett's Obituary
Elizabeth Gordon Sample Trickett died in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 4, 2015.
Born September 18, 1924 in DeRidder, Louisiana to George Gordon and Harriet Simonton Sample, Elizabeth followed her father’s railroad career throughout her early years. The family moved first to New Orleans and later Galveston where Elizabeth graduated from Ball High School. After living in El Paso and San Antonio, the family settled in Shreveport after her father’s retirement.
Displaying musical talent at an early age, she pursued her education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where she received a Bachelor’s degree in music and education. She studied toward a Masters Degree in music at Columbia University in New York before she rejoined her family in Shreveport. Later, she received a Masters in education from LSU-Shreveport.
In Shreveport she met her future husband, James Albert Trickett, when both were singing in the choir at Noel Methodist Church. They married on June 18, 1948 and remained so until Albert’s death in 2001. They had two children, David George Trickett of Denver and John Franklin Trickett of Charleston, Arkansas. Elizabeth took great joy from her four grandchildren: Bea Trickett of Gordonsville, VA; Gillian Trickett of Denver; Piers Trickett also of Denver; and Erin Trickett of Albuquerque. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Edward and Matthew of Denver. Elizabeth is also survived by her sister, Cornelia Morgan of Corpus Christi, TX. Dariele Auteri of Fayetteville also occupied a special place in Elizabeth’s heart.
Albert and Elizabeth were active in the establishment of the Upper Room Sunday School class at Noel and she maintained close ties with the Church throughout her life. When the couple moved to Baton Rouge in 1979, Elizabeth supported her husband’s ministerial career and also volunteered her time to various civic organizations. She remained in Baton Rouge for several years after Albert’s death but moved to Fayetteville in 2009.
A private graveside service and interment is planned in Shreveport, Louisiana. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Trickett Vocal Music Education Scholarship at the Baton Rouge Music Club, 18824 Santa Maria Parkway, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70809.
