Garland Lee Standrod's Obituary
Garland Lee Standrod was born July 15, 1940, and died May 25, 2026, at Willard Walker Hospice in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
He was raised in Fort Smith. Graduated from Fort Smith Senior High School; Tulane University (BA; philosophy, Phi Beta Kappa), attended Leeds University in England, University of Maryland (MLS, library science, Beta Phi Mu), and received a PhD in international library science.
While living in New York City he was employed by the New York Herald Tribune. Served as a yeoman in the Navy on a destroyer (USS Charles H Roan DD-853). Serving In the Peace Corps he established a library in Kathmandu, Nepal for the Center for Economic Development. For 38 years living in Washington D.C. he worked at the Smithsonian Institution, was a reference librarian at the Department of Interior and eventually worked in the Environmental Policy Division of the Library of Congress. He ended his government service at the US State Department (USAID as a program analyst for science and technology grants.)
As a hobby he wrote plays, with his work staged at venues such as Washington D.C.'s Source Theatre, New York City's Village Gate, Virginia public television, Maryland public radio, and the Smokehouse Players in Fayetteville. He belonged to Vest Pocket Productions in D.C. and the Arkansas Playwrights Workshop in Fayetteville.
He is survived by his brother, Mike Standrod and wife Jodie, and nephew Joe Standrod, all of Fayetteville.
Interment will be at Fayetteville National Cemetery. There will be no service.
