The Man Under the Cap
Mr. Gary Don Hughey was a wonderful chap,
From the tip of his toes to the brim of his cap -
St. Louis Cardinals cap, that is.
He was charismatic, and a diligent leader,
His infectious smile was a mile-wide greeter –
But not nearly as big as is heart.
Did this man love his children?
Why he found no better way of chillin’ –
Than spending time having fun with them both.
Were there grandkids in the picture?
Why they were always a standard fixture -
Two angels he just couldn’t love enough.
What can you say about his wife?
We should all be blessed in life –
With a dandy as compassionate as his Sandy.
But was Gary a man of God?
All who knew him know the path he trod -
Now he’s home catchin’ crappie with Him.
Juanita and I did not know Gary as long as most, but we feel so fortunate that God made it possible to have him in our lives for the time we did. May you, Sandy, and the rest of your beautiful family carry on as he would expect, filling the void with all the wonderful, fun, and glorious memories you will recall often. My Uncle Gary was always so quick with a joke! He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. In his later years, he really began to remind me of my grandfather, Drew Hughey. I miss them both.
Memories of my Daddy, there are so many. The best memory as I look through photos is his smile. He smiled with his whole face and heart. He loved us with his entire being. We were all so blessed to be granted the best Daddy and to be in his presence. I never forget how special he made every day especially the holidays. He was such a big kid! All the trips and laughter we shared, those are my memories. I miss him so much. I will always be his little baby girl.
