Gene Lynch's Obituary
Gene Lynch, 92, of Fayetteville, Ark., passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, at Willard Walker Hospice. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Gene was also a distinguished retired professor emeritus of the College of Business at the University of Arkansas.
Born on July 25, 1932, in Leona, TX, Gene was the youngest of eight children of Ally and Mabel Lynch. His legacy lives on through his devoted wife of 69 years, Mary Lynch, their daughter Lynne Moore (and her husband Joe), and sons David Lynch (and his wife Joy) and K.C. Lynch. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Jacquie Marroquin, Joe Moore, Linda Williams, Andy Lynch, and Allyson Gilpin, as well as four great-grandsons: Evan Shields, Vince Moore, Troy Williams, and Roman Williams. Gene is further survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews who cherished their time together.
Gene’s career spanned over four decades, beginning at Texas Christian University and culminating in a remarkable tenure at the University of Arkansas. In 1966, he was appointed the inaugural chairholder of the Arkansas Bankers Association Chair of Banking, and his dedication to the Walton College of Business was unparalleled. Gene’s academic journey took him from the University of Texas in Austin, where he earned his undergraduate, master’s, and PhD degrees in finance, to a prolific career in teaching and research.
As a professor, Gene was known for his commitment to inspiring and mentoring students in finance, real estate, and international business. His enthusiasm for teaching and his extensive knowledge of consumer finance and banking laws, including the restrictive Arkansas interest rate law, helped shape the careers of countless students. Gene’s contributions extended beyond the classroom, as he played a crucial role in the development of new financial institutions across Arkansas.
Outside of academia, Gene was a passionate bridge player, gardener, and bluegrass music enthusiast. His zest for life and his ability to blend his professional expertise with his personal interests made him a beloved figure in his community.
Gene Lynch’s impact on his family, students, and the broader community will be remembered with admiration and affection. His legacy of knowledge, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
