George Meyer's Obituary
George Burnett Meyer, Jr. passed away at his home March 24, 2006 at 12:35 am. He was the beloved husband of Betty S. Meyer who keenly loved this most loveable man and cherishes warm memories of 55 years together.
He is survived by two children, Nancy Jo Meyer and George Donald Meyer, both of Fayetteville, Arkansas; two brothers, Ted A. Meyer of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Connie R. Meyer of St. Louis, Missouri; two sisters, Gretchen Knapp of Brecksville, Ohio and Lynn Timar of Avon, Ohio; three grandchildren, Aaron Meyer-Giles, George Garret Meyer and Joshua N. Durden all of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
His sister, Dove Ann Beitz, and both parents, George Burnett Meyer, Sr. and Lena Huff Meyer, preceded George in death.
George was born on July 23, 1926 in Mabelvale, Pulaski Co., Arkansas. He married Johnnie Elizabeth (Betty) Sherman in Harrison, Boone, Co., Arkansas on December 15, 1950. Betty?s parents are Carrie Granville Wood and John William Sherman and she was born on July 29, 1932 in Viola, Fulton Co., Arkansas.
George went to school at Mabelvale from the first grade to the twelfth grade. Later he was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1944. He went through boot camp at Paris
Island in South Carolina and after boot camp he was sent to Camp Lejeune in North
Carolina to a Japanese language school because he had aced the grammar part of the government classification test. For this he thanked his Aunt Carrie because she had been his English teacher at Mabelvale.
George went to the University of Arkansas on a basketball scholarship and the GI Bill. He graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business and then he went to work teaching in Viola, Arkansas where he met his wife. He went to Veterinary School in 1957 and graduated at Oklahoma State University in 1963. Then he practiced in Batesville, Arkansas and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Finally, he settled at Hermosa Beach, California where he practiced for 25 years. George was President of the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association; a member of the Veterinarian Medical Examiners Board for 7 years; the Independence County Chairman of the Republican Party in Arkansas; and a Founding Member of the American Maine-Anjou Cattle Association. He retired in 1997 to Fayetteville, Arkansas to be with his family.
A celebration of George?s life will be held on Wednesday, March 29th, at the 1936 Club, 300 West Dickson Street, Fayetteville, Arkansas at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Stillwater, Oklahoma or Washington Regional Hospice in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
