Rev. George Urban's Obituary
As you are reading this notice, the Reverend George Urban, 85 has departed on Thursday, October 18, 2012 to His Home Country, for the Christian’s citizenship “is in Heaven” [according to Philippians 3:20 – 21] where the Lord Jesus Christ “will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory.” That’s good news, not bad!
George was born February 28, 1927 in Riga, Latvia. He grew up in Paris, France, until after the Second World War when he came to the States to further his education and prepare for the ministry. He holds several undergraduate and graduate degrees from five institutions. He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in Philadelphia, in 1957 and has served five congregations in Maine, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. For a number of years, in addition to his pastoral work, George taught French and Russian in both public and private schools. He also has served as Northeast Staff representative for “Mission Aviation Fellowship,” headquartered in California. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth – his loving companion for 61 years, a very effective partner in their ministry together. Survivors include also his much-loved children; Jennifer Hager of Fayetteville, Kevin Urban and wife, Mary of Oakridge, Oregon; 5 grandchildren, Joshua and Zachary Hager, Casey and Jacob Urban; and one grand-daughter, Rebecca (Hager) Walker and her husband Greg, and a great grand-daughter, Mia of Farmington, AR; great-grandson Gavin and a great-granddaughter Kate. Private graveside services will be held in the morning of Thursday, October 25 at Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Moore’s Chapel. A memorial service will be held at the University Baptist Church, of which George is a member, at 2:00 p.m., Thursday with Dr. H.D. McCarty officiating.
