Helen Amelia Kerr Newcombe's Obituary
Mrs. Helen Amelia Kerr Newcombe, widow of Frank Allen Newcombe, died at age 97, on October 7, 2004, in the home of her daughter, Janis Gill Ward of Fayetteville, where she moved two years ago from Naples, Florida, having previously resided in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Born in Flemington, New Jersey in 1907 to Fred and Caroline Holton Kerr, She often marveled at the vast changes she saw in her lifetime, from the wide-spread use of the automobile, to radios, televisions, computers, modern medicine, etc. She was proud of her work with John A. Robbling and Son of Trenton, N.J. where she typed the orders for the wire for the Golden Gate Bridge.
She was a very devoted mother, wife and homemaker who loved to play bridge and golf and enjoyed entertaining and being with her family. She created paintings all her life and loved being surrounded by beauty. A gifted storyteller, she had a knack for filling hours with interesting details from the olden days. She was most proud of her husband, who moved his family to Arkansas to manage the Westinghouse light bulb plant in Little Rock in 1949, and who later built up a transformer company, now named Central Maloney, in Pine Bluff. She was preceded in death by her son, Bert Allen Newcombe, a brother and two sisters.
Survivors besides her daughter, includes the following grandchildren: Tracie Gill Slattery and John Gregory Gill of Fayetteville; Guy Gill, III of Tarry, AR and Gary Howard Gill of Little Rock, AR, Cynthia Lyn Newcombe, Frank A. Newcombe, Janis Salsbury and Bert Newcombe, all of Naples, Florida, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
A small family memorial service will be held in Fayetteville, with a graveside service in Naples, Florida. Memorials may be made to Washington Regional Hospice, the First Methodist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, or a charity of choice.
