Dr. Horace Daniel Atwood MD's Obituary
Dr. Horace Daniel Atwood MD, age 74, of Fayetteville, AR passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Born November 12, 1951 in McComb Mississippi, he is the son of the late Horace Alton Atwood and Clara Fay Reeves Atwood. Daniel was married to the late Miriam Carraway Atwood.
Dr. H. D. Atwood served all his life. He joined the Air Force Academy in 1969, joined the medical corps, and joined the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1973 graduating with his doctorate in 1977. Dr. Dan was a man of powerful faith, always leading youth groups and Bible studies. It was during this time that he met his darling wife while she was singing in the choir in Mississippi.
He began serving the USAF Medical Center as a general surgeon in Biloxi, MS. He became the Air Force’s Chief of Surgery in the Azores, then Chief of Plastic Surgery and Chairman of the Craniofacial Anomaly Board at Travis AFB in California. He was discharged from the Air Force a Lt. Col. and settled with his family here in Northwest Arkansas to run the Fayetteville Plastic Surgery Clinic for the next 40 years.
Dr. Dan saw Plastic Surgery as an artform. He studied and practiced art and continually applied his great skill to rebuilding many people from various traumas. His greatest pride and recognition came from helping women after battles with cancer.
Dr. Daniel Atwood carried through his life with overwhelming joy and warmth. His spirit of giving happiness and comfort everywhere he went will be sorely missed.
Dr. Atwood is survived by his sons Thomas Atwood, Ethan Atwood, Christopher Atwood; his daughter, Sallie Atwood; his sister, Christy Atwood; and his five grandchildren, Daniel Atwood, Sam Atwood, Liam Atwood, Rhett Chard, and Molly Chard.
Dr. Atwood’s service will be held 10:00 a.m., March 21st, 2026, at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville, before he will be laid to rest with his beloved wife.
