If there is a picture in the dictionary of one of the finest Americans and a true gentleman, you will see Dr. Jack Perkins. He probably never knew how much he meant to me and hundreds of other college students. He taught us many things out of books, but mostly importantly he taught integrity, principle and how to fairly treat people. Plus, he had more patience with some of us than you can imagine. I owe him a lot. Dr. Perkins had "Class".
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Perkins family. I was blessed by having Dr. Perkins as a professor and even more blessed when I was able to be a part of the livestock judging team that he coached. He was a truly wonderful influence on my life, reminding me (and my fellow students) the importance of hard work and honesty. He was the most genuine and sincere person I had the fortune to know at the U of A and I know he will be missed by MANY. Thanks, Dr. Perkins, for being a very memorable part of my college experience!
Dr. Perkins hired me sight-unseen as his research assistant in 1984. I drove from Kentucky to Fayetteville and walked into the Animal Science building to meet him. He greeted me like he had known me all my life. I learned so much from Dr. Perkins while I was working on my PhD. A lot of it dealt with animal science but most of it dealt with life in general. He truly was one of a kind. He was one of the most sincere people I have ever met. To say that he had a profound effect on my life is a understatement. He changed my life. He offered me the opportunity of a lifetime by allowing me to learn from him.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I'm sorry that I will not be able to attend the Memorial Service as I will be attending a Memorial Service for my nephew on the same day in Oklahoma. This does not minimize by expression of love for Jack and the family. May God give you His Strength and Peace during these difficult times.
Judy, we send our love and sympathy as you go through the following days without Jack. We enjoyed our association in real estate as we helped you sell and build. Mostly, Judy, we appreciate the help Jack gave Bob in 1966 when Bob came to the UofA as a freshman at age 23. Jack was a young new employee at the UofA and he advised Bob, helping him set up his 4 year plan so he could get through college quicker than most. Jack helped him get through with a masters in 4 1/2 years. Throughout the years he helped and encouraged so many students. Our prayer is that you and your family will be comforted by God's presence and love.
Dr. Perkins was one of my favorite professors at the U of A. He was a genuinely nice man who enjoyed teaching and mentoring young people. He also possessed a great work ethic and a wry sense of humor that always had us in stitches. Qualities that made us love him. One of my favorite memories was when I and a couple of other students were working on the research farm at the University. It was a miserably hot day in the summer and we were digging holes in the hard rocky NW Arkansas ground to set a gate. Lots of rocks and the work was pretty tough. Dr. Perkins pulled up in his Ford pickup and saw our situation. He got out and picked up an steel bar and starting gouging rocks to be dug out with the rest of us. One of us commented "Dang Doc, I never knew a PhD would work like normal folks!" Without skipping a beat he replied in that familiar drawl "Well Hell, ya know what PhD stands for dontcha?" ..."Post Hole Digger" We all laughed of course and we got the gate hung. :-) He never let titles or position put him above us. We were his kids and he treated us like family. Prayers for comfort to the Perkins family. Thank you for sharing him with those of us who were privileged to know and learn from him. God Bless.
I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Perkins. I was fortunate to have him as my advisor and livestock judging coach. Some of my fondest memories from college include the times I spent in judging practice with Dr. Perkins and the team. His passion to teach was matched only by his humor. He was certainly a special person and I am a better person for having known him. Dr. Perkins will always hold a special place in my heart.
To the Perkins family, I am sad to hear the passing of Dr. Perkins. Besides being on the Livestock team back in the 70's, Dr. Perkins taught us young men and ladies a great deal more then the skills of livestock judging. Dr. Perkins was a great role model to follow, he made us all better in many ways. We loved him then and we love him now. God Bless
Mrs. Judy, I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Jack. I know you know how much all of his students loved him. Dr. Jack never told me I couldn't do something but that I could. He was my rock in the ANSC department for the 4 years I was there. The time spent on the Livestock team were the best times of my life. My prayer is for you, the boys and their families: may you have peace and rest assure that he is a better place. I am forever grateful for all Dr. Jack did for me.
