Jim was one of the kindest men I have ever known. He gave me my first opportunity to publish a book chapter, and I know that I was the not the first or last new scholar whose career received a gentle push from him. I always looked forward to seeing him at the Southeast Philosophy of Education Society. He was always willing to share what he was working on and ready to listen to all of everyone else's ideas. He such enthusiasm for his work and for the work of others. We are all richer from knowing him.

I met Jim through the Southwestern Philosophy of Education Society and the Southern Futures Society. Jim mentored me and other young scholars and helped us become part of the academy. He gave us the opportunity to publish and nurtured in the process. A true gentleman and scholar. We will miss him.

I treasure remembrance of his kindness and helpfulness to me at the beginning of my career and his friendship during the years since. I had the privilege of working with Dr. Van Patten in the 80's as his secretary and I do believe he is one of the sweetest men I have ever known. I will miss his happy smile and his quirky sense of humor. He was always so kind and had such a positive attitude. One of my fondest memories is when Dr. Van Patten would go home in the afternoon to take a nap and my job was tell anyone who asked about him that he was at the "Library" doing research.
