James Edgar "Jim" Lindsey's Obituary
James Edgar "Jim" Lindsey, 81, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2026, following a lengthy illness.
Jim was born on November 24, 1944, in Wynne, Arkansas, to Elmer Earl Lindsey and Ida Cary (Busby) Lindsey. He was the youngest of six children and spent his childhood with his family on the farm and playing ball. He attended Forrest City High School and played his last high school football game at the young age of 16. After graduation, he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Arkansas, where his leadership and commitment helped the Razorbacks win a national title in 1964. Jim graduated with a degree in mathematics.
To many, Jim Lindsey was a Razorback national champion, a Minnesota Viking, a visionary businessman, and one of Northwest Arkansas' most influential leaders. To those who knew him best, however, he was devoted to his family, loved his children, and adored his grandchildren, and was a faithful friend. He loved encouraging and helping others. His legacy will be measured not only by what he accomplished, but by people and causes he dearly supported.
On May 21, 1967, he married Nita Kaye Vanhook of Newport, Arkansas. Jim signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 1966 and was the special teams captain from 1967 to 1972. Jim helped lead the Vikings to Super Bowl IV. At the same time, he proudly served his country in the Arkansas Army National Guard from 1966 to 1970.
Jim had a natural love for land and decided to invest his NFL signing bonus in property that would later become the site of the Northwest Arkansas Mall, demonstrating a vision that would shape the real estate market of Northwest Arkansas for decades to come. After his NFL career, he returned home to Arkansas with his growing family and founded Lindsey & Associates in 1974, Lindsey Construction Company in 1981, and Lindsey Management Company in 1985. Through these companies, he helped transform the landscape of Arkansas and surrounding states in real estate and apartments, many featuring golf courses.
Jim loved the University of Arkansas and was grateful for the opportunities it provided to him. He was devoted to giving back to the Razorbacks. Alongside his coach and dear friend Frank Broyles, he helped establish the Razorback Foundation, forever changing the future of Razorback Athletics. As co-founder of the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, he helped create the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's most outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on. He also established the Ferrell and Weber Scholarship, providing opportunities for future athletic trainers at the University of Arkansas.
His desire to serve extended to his community. Jim sought the office of Governor of Arkansas in 1976. He later served on the Arkansas Board of Corrections, the boards of Peoples Bank & Trust and First Security Bank, and the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees from 1999 until 2009. He was a lifetime member of the Salvation Army.
Jim received many honors, including induction into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, the United States Department of Justice Award for Public Service in 1993, induction into the Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame in 2005, and induction into the Arkansas Business Hall of Fame in 2010.
Jim was a member of University Baptist Church in Fayetteville. His faith shaped both his life and his generosity. His belief that blessings are meant to be shared as taught in I John 3:17 guided every chapter of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Tommye Satterfield, Betty Holman, and Joyce Clark; and his brother, B. Lindsey.
Despite all his awards and accomplishments, Jim’s greatest joy was his family and those that called him husband, dad, grandad, brother and uncle. When his health allowed, he never missed a special moment as his children and grandchildren were the light in his eyes. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Nita Kaye Vanhook Lindsey; his sister, Claudette Ferguson of Harrison, Arkansas; his sons, James Earl "Lyndy" Lindsey and wife Laura, and John David Lindsey and wife Brooke, all of Fayetteville; his daughter, Sarah Lindsey Clark Hyneman and husband Brian Hyneman of Fayetteville and Jonesboro; his grandchildren, Jack Lindsey (Hailey), Sam Lindsey, Link Lindsey (Cambrey Parrish), Loren Lindsey, Libby Lindsey, Drake Lindsey, Cooper Clark, Tyler Clark, and Annakaye Clark; his great-grandson, Sawyer Lindsey; and numerous nieces, nephews, cherished friends, former teammates, colleagues, and business associates whose lives were enriched by his friendship.
Much thanks to Jim’s nurse Tim Sherman who became his closest friend, and the team of caregivers that extended his time here with us. The family is indebted to their love, care, and concern for Jimmy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 24th at 2:30 p.m. at University Baptist Church. The family will be available for visitation following the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Razorback Foundation, Ventures for Christ, Caldwell Baptist Church, or the Bridge Church in Wynne, AR.
