My heart is breaking along with all of yours today and I wish I could be there to pay tribute to an amazing gem of a gal. Joanne left her mark on everyone she met and we are all better people for knowing her. I will miss her sweet voice, funny laugh and positive attitude. She will live forever in our hearts. Dear Tompkin Family: You are in our thoughts and prayers as the road that you have and will contiune to travel in the days and months ahead will be a rocky one. Joanne as you know was a wonderful lady and had a spirit about her that should be bottled and spread across the nation. We are all better people from knowing and having Joanne as our friend. Joanne was a woman of strength that showed courage in the midst of her fear. Joanne's had faith that in this journey that she would become a stronger and better person, however it was us that learned we all could do better in the this walk of life.

We find it very hard to accept that only a year ago we were all so tickled at Joanne and her display of REAL BASEBALL ENTHUSIASM!! As you both well know, your wife and mother was a real gem. The first time she met anyone they felt as if they had known her all of their lives. It is hard to understand (impossible actually) why someone with so much heart, compassion, enthusiasm and pure love of her family and life would have to leave us so soon. I know it hurts so much. You are in our prayers and thoughts, not only yesterday and today, but in the future as well and if you boys need us for anything--we are a phone call away. Love from the Abernathy Family
Chris is such a wonderful child, he had to have been raised by wonderful parents. He is the true reflection of love, kindness, generosity and good heartedness. I would have adored having 25 just like him in a class. He is special, and so was his mother. Joanne was an involved parent with encouragement for Chris and kind words for our (the Marshals) team.
I remember meeting her at church one day. She proudly introduced herself as Chris's mom, and I couldn't help but smile. What a lucky mom I thought!

I read of Joanne's passing today and just wanted to express my condolences. Joanne came by the Fayetteville shelter several months ago, and we chatted for a moment. She was kind enough to give me a glowing report on Gracie, and I knew just from meeting you two at the shelter and helping with that adoption that you were loving, caring people. May that love return to you and sustain you, and may Joanne be at peace.
