I first met Dr. Joe back in '91. I was in High School and was friends with his son, Doug (and, 30+ years later, I still am!). Most of the time, one has only passing familiarity with the parents of their friends. Some parents barely acknowledge the presence of their kids' friends and will often forget their names. But Joe was different (and to be fair, Kathy was too!). Joe actively chatted with me and all the rest of Doug's friends. Some parents would "fake it" and pretend to be interested in whatever nerd culture we were delving into. Not Joe. He was an active conversationalist, he had genuine curiosity. We liked Star Trek? Well, then, so did he! And he would ask us about it. He wanted to get the details right. "Now what's this about?" "Who is that?" "What is a Heisenberg Compensator?" It was all said and done with legitimate curiosity. And not just in High School. It carried over into College...and after College. When Doug, me and the rest of the boys were all 40...we loaded up in Dr. Joe's car and he drove us to see Force Awakens in 2015. We spent years...decades...hanging out. He never mocked us nor trolled us. He wanted to be a participant in whatever looney 'venture we were exploring. Put simply: he cared about us. And that, among many other things, is what made him a 2nd dad to me and the rest of the guys. And when that dad is a loving, caring dad...nobody wants to see them go. I don't want to see Joe, my 2nd dad, go. But...I don't really think death in this mortal coil is the end...so, you know...maybe...just maybe...we'll talk again someday and I'll finally finish my explanation of Heisenberg Compensators.
