John Locke Huddleston's Obituary
John Locke Huddleston, age 95, passed away on Tuesday August 13, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 19, 1929 at home in Richmond, AR to the late Robert Emmet Huddleston and Mary Locke Huddleston. John married the love of his life, Nancy, on August 24, 1961 and together they had 2 children, Scott and Cindy, and he gained a bonus son, Joe Cohea. John was preceded in death by his parents, his son Scott, and siblings Robert, James, Mathew, Mary, Angeline and Ruth.
John attended high school in Hooks, TX, graduating in 1947. Soon after graduation, John was drafted into the Army and deployed over-seas during the Korean war. Upon his return from the war, John worked at the Red River Arsenal before moving to Fayetteville to attend the U of A where he received a bachelor’s degree in Education. John retired from the University of Arkansas in 1991 after working 31 years in Computing Services. When John was first hired, the University was in the process of changing over to their first computer system. My how he saw technology change over the years!
Known for his giving nature, John was involved in the Noon Kiwanis club and later the Evening Lions club, where he served as Treasurer for many years. John had a passion for diabetes awareness education and helping those diagnosed with the disease to be able to afford their medications and testing supplies. It was because of his dedication to the community that he was named Lion of the Year by the Evening Lions club in 2003. He was also a proud member of Central United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities including Sunday School Superintendent, usher, taught a Sunday School class for boys and was a Cub Scouts leader.
John grew up in rural Arkansas and loved the outdoors. Over the years, he and Nancy raised chickens commercially, planted beautiful garden and flower beds and John always made sure that the birds that came into his yard had plenty to eat.
Funeral service will be directed by Moore’s Chapel and held at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville at 2pm on Tuesday August 20, 2024, followed by graveside service with Military honors at Fairview Cemetery in Fayetteville.
