Joyce Lorraine Fleet Whitney's Obituary
Joyce Lorraine Fleet Whitney, age 84, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2014. A much loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was born in Enid, Oklahoma on September 20, 1929 to Earl W. and Clara T. Fleet.
She was raised in Overland Park, Kansas, attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri and completed her education at Kansas State University. There she met Kenneth R. Whitney. They married on May 31, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri. In retirement, they moved to the Rocky Branch area of Rogers, Arkansas to build their dream home overlooking Beaver Lake. Joyce attended Bland Chapel Methodist Church, was a First Responder and was active in P.E.O., a philanthropic organization promoting educational opportunities for women. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She is survived by one daughter, Cathy Whitney and husband Oscar Calzada of Fayetteville; one son, Gary Whitney and wife Mary of Chicago; one granddaughter, Sophia Calzada of Fayetteville and one sister, Barbara Plymire and husband David of Stuarts Draft, Virginia.
A celebration and remembrance of Joyce Whitney’s life will take place in the spring, date and location yet to be determined.
Arrangements are by Moore’s Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to P.E.O. Executive Office, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312 and noted as “a memorial for Joyce Whitney of the BT Chapter, Arkansas, designated for the PCE Project.” These memorials will benefit the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education.
