Sarah Spears
Its been nine years since my Granny past, we Grandchildren called her that. I remember fond memories of helping her peel potatoes and baking cakes. Watching the birds outside her loving room window, making snow ice cream, teaching me how to prune rose bushes. Roses were her favorite. I was a child of four and my grandparents helped out a lot because both my parents worked and one owned a business for a time. And how she spoiled us! She was my best friend, she was there during the highs and lows, a constant source of knowledge and wisdom. How I miss talking to her. We would talk about everything and “spill the tea.” We would watch old movies, “Singing in the Rain,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” etc
I remember we watched “The Last of the Mohicans,” before she passed. She loved history. I would listen to hear stories about living in Tulsa and stories about her father and his family, that lived in Russellville, Arkansas. They immigrated from Europe. About her mother’s family in Kentucky, growing up supposedly moonshiners, growing up on a dirt floor. She said mother’s Great Grand father fought in the Civil War, lost a leg, and he saw cars for the first time in his old age and wouldn’t ride in them. My Great Grandfather was called Julius and my Great Grandmother was called PollyAnn. He built there house in Tulsa and worked in a factory. We loved watching “Dancing with the Stars,” she loved Apollo, when he was on and even got the chance to meet him when he was here. She was from a different generation, they were tough and honest, but also the most loving, devoted, and loyal to their families. I regret not spending more time with her, it is true, you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. I was in young and in college and stopped by less. I thought I would have more time. I wanted to take her to Europe with me but her health declined. I knew she was there with me on my trips abroad and always in my heart. Please cherish your grandmothers, they are such priceless treasures. I love and miss you, Granny.
Your loving Granddaughter,
Sarah
