i recently returned from a long trip and heard that Dr. Bernie Daniels had passed away, so I regret the tardiness of this tribute. I first met Bernie when I interviewed in 1984 for a UA faculty position in what was then called the Agronomy Department. I instantl warmed up to Bernie because of his openness and forthrightness. I went on to a long career at UA, frequently interacting with Bernie; in fact, he was critical in advancing my research efforts and those of other colleagues of mine in the Animal Science Department. Bernie had tremendous insight into the agricultural needs of Arkansas, and clear vision of how the University can muster its human capital and facilities to meet those needs. Bernie was a role model for me as I pursued my career in agricultural research and teaching. The obituary accurately described Bernie's endearing personality and professional accomplishments. I was fortunate to know his dear wife, Jeanie, and his wonderful son Mike. My wife, Jane, and I offer our deep condolences to the Daniels family.
