Lionel C. Skaggs' Obituary
Lionel Curtis Skaggs, 83, of Fayetteville, Arkansas died September 25, 2013. Mr. Skaggs was a retired university administrator in the field of Human Resources. Born on December 9, 1929 in Crystal City, Missouri, he was the son of Wendell and Sadie (Brown) Skaggs.
Mr. Skaggs was a member of the First Christian Church of Fayetteville, served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-50, graduate of Festus High School (1948), and graduate of the University of Arkansas (1955).
Following his retirement in 1989 as Assistant Vice President for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), he returned to Fayetteville where he served the community in many ways including serving on the Board of Directors for the Washington County Historical Society, and on the Board of Directors for Butterfield Trail Village, Inc. He also served as a consultant to several universities and as a speaker for seminars and conferences on human resource management and labor relations. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonial on January 17, 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara (Shreve), son Todd (Jodi) Skaggs of Birmingham, Alabama; son Derek (Tracie) Skaggs of Carl Junction, Missouri; brother John (Janet) Skaggs of Herculaneum, MO; two sisters: Trula M. Skaggs of Festus and Loretta Faye (John “Buddy”) Oldham of Pevely; two stepsisters: Norma (the late George) Fenwick of Festus and Mary Lou (and the late Oscar) Roth of Festus; brothers and sisters-in-laws: Ben and Martha Shreve of Springdale, Jim and Marty Shreve of Bella Vista, and Connie Shreve Ashbacher, Diamond City; five grandchildren: Laren, Lanie, Will, Nathan, and Katie. He is preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Cleda (Strobel) Koehler Skaggs, brother Wayne Skaggs, and stepbrother, William E. (Shirley survives) Koehler.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 1 at 11:30 at the First Christian Church of Fayetteville, officiated by Rev. Ryan Pfeiffer. Burial will be a private ceremony at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville. Visitation will be Monday, September 30, 6-7:30 pm at Moore’s Chapel. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church (220 North College Ave., Fayetteville, AR 72701).
