Margaret Dorothy Rom's Obituary
Margaret Dorothy Rom, loyal spouse of Roy C. Rom, and loving mother of Cristine, Gretchen, Curt and Mark, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009, after a life dedicated to family, church, and music. Margaret (Meg) was born in Metropolis, Illinois, July 17, 1928 daughter of the Reverend Henry and Frieda Muehleisen and granddaughter of the Reverend Herman Dilger. She grew up in rural Illinois and Wisconsin. She attended Valparaiso University and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Music Education. She and Roy were married by her father in Rockfield, Wisconsin, August 13, 1950. They moved to Fayetteville in 1959. In Fayetteville she was a music educator, civic volunteer, church music leader, and active parent. She was instrumental in the founding of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and served as its first organist and youth choir director. Community activities included years of volunteer leadership and service to the American Red Cross, to Washington Regional Medical Center, the girl and cub scouts, the Garden Club, the Fayetteville Cancer House, the Reach for Recovery breast cancer survivor program, and as an early participant in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure as one of Northwest Arkansas’ longest cancer survivors. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, and art.
She is survived by her husband Roy C. Rom of Fayetteville,children Cristine Rom and Alan Rocke of Cleveland, Ohio, Gretchen and Richard Stark of McLean, Virginia, Curt R. Rom and Melissa Harwood-Rom of Fayetteville, and Mark Rom and Laura Nickle of Falls Church, Virginia, and grandchildren Lizzie Stark and George Locke (Edison, NJ), Zoë and Clio Rom (Fayetteville), Christopher and Kittredge Rom and Drew Nickle (Falls Church).
A visitation will be conducted on Wednesday, September 16, 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Nelson-Berna Funeral Home. A memorial service of music, readings and reflection will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, on Thursday, September 17, beginning at 2:00pm.
Memorials and gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Ozark Guidance Center, or a charity of choice.
