Margaret Elizabeth Moorhead Ashton's Obituary
Margaret Elizabeth Moorhead Ashton passed on January 19, 2014 at Willard Walker Hospice Home in Washington Regional Hospital. Margaret was born in Durant, Mississippi on September 22, 1916. She was the daughter of Myrtle W. and James L. Moorhead. She had six siblings, Fred, Dona, James L., Buford, Robert, and Helena who each preceded her in death. Margaret was 97 years of age at the time of her passing. She moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2003 from Germantown, Tennessee. She was a resident of Homestyle Assisted Living in Springdale at the time of her passing.
Margaret contributed throughout her life to her community. She attended the Jackson Mississippi Infirmary School of Nursing where she graduated in 1941 as a Registered Nurse. She met and married M.W. “Dub” Ashton in Jackson, Mississippi in 1941. Her passion for nursing was the foundation of her nursing career until she retired in 1984 at Memphis, Tennessee.
Margaret had a passion for travel and cruising. She traveled extensively in the United States and her passion led to an exploration by train of the Southwest United States and Canada. She enjoyed cruising the Caribbean and the Eastern Seaboard. She especially enjoyed Jamaica. She had a zeal for cooking, especially for her family.
Margaret is survived by Dub Ashton and his wife, Sandra, of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Ginger Coggins and her husband, Joe, of Germantown, Tennessee; William L. “Bill” Ashton and his wife, Mary Ann, of Collierville, Tennessee; Andrea “Candy” Ashton-Blackburn and her husband, Phillip, of Shelbyville, Tennessee. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Bart Coggins of Rogers, Arkansas; Scott Coggins of Bartlett, Tennessee; Heather Ashton of Hollywood, California; J. Stephen Wood of Waycross, Georgia; Lindsey Kidd of Atlanta, Georgia; Laura Ashton of Nashville, Tennessee; Fallon Blackburn of Shelbyville, Tennessee; and Ashton Blackburn of Shelbyville, Tennessee. She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services are pending in Memphis, Tennessee. Donations in memory of Margaret may be addressed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
