Margaret Susan Probst's Obituary
Margaret Susan “Peggy” Probst, 54 years old, died of complications from a tumor on February 24, 2016 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Peggy, born November 24, 1961 in Fayetteville, was daughter of Max John “M.J.” Probst and Sydney Slack Probst. She is survived by her brother, Jason Probst; his wife, Jacqueline and their children, Charles, Vincent and Catherine; her Aunts Peggy Phelps and Paula Stanley; and her poodle and companion of fourteen years, Hope. Peggy graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1983 with a BA in Political Science and later earned her Masters of Social Work from Washburn University in 1998. She was a practicing social worker at Northwest Medical Center, Springdale, Arkansas.
Peggy was a vocal, fierce and uncompromising champion for the mentally ill, homeless, those suffering from substance and alcohol abuse, and victims of abuse or injustice of any kind. She was beloved and respected by her colleagues and patients alike. Peggy’s own struggles and triumphs made her that much more effective, relatable and human for the men and women she counseled and helped throughout her career. Family, friends and helping others were Peggy’s greatest passions in life.
Peggy was a beauty, elegant and stylish, with a wonderfully contagious laugh and razor sharp wit. She shared her opinions openly and freely, had a wry and irreverent sense of humor and was not afraid to laugh at herself. She was a voracious reader and loved the arts – visual, dance, movies, theatre and music. She rode horses and was most alive at a full gallop. Peggy was a proud Arkansan and an equally loud and proud “yellow dog” democrat.
A memorial service will be held later this spring at Rose Hill Cemetery in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Peggy’s ashes will be laid to rest next to her Mother, Sydney Probst; Grandmother, Sue Slack; and Grandfather, Jimmy Slack.
