Marie G. Phillips' Obituary
Marie G. Phillips passed away on Friday, May 4th, 2007 at 9:11 p.m. She was in process of getting ready to celebrate her 90th birthday. She was born in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of Reinhold Carl and Emma (Zimmermann) Galipp, and went to elementary and high school in Dallas and graduated from high school in Missouri. She went on to attend business college in Chillicothe, Missouri.
Marie worked as an administrative secretary for Encyclopedia Brittanica and then went on to work for an export-import company owned by the de Sa family. She specialized in publications, scientific books and periodicals.
It was while she was helping to set up the foreign offices in South America that she met her future husband, Sydney Cecil Phillips. He was an engineer who worked for R.G. Letourneau. They were married in October of 1955, and they traveled all over the world together, and had one daughter Karen. They lived in Africa, Argentina, Belgium, and Turkey, and then retired together in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Marie was a very warm, caring and gregarious person. Her interests were
traveling, international affairs, reading and corresponding. She loved
people and kept up many friendships with friends she made from all over the world. During retirement she also became very involved in volunteering and helped to establish the Volunteer Hospitality group at Washington Regional Medical Center. She also became actively involved with Bible study at Covenant Presbyterian Church, and with the Bible Study groups at Brookstone Assisted Living.
She was a beautiful person and will be much missed, and remembered with much love by her family, friends, and community.
She is survived by one daughter; Karen Phillips of Chapel Hill, North
Carolina and one sister; Frieda C. Galipp of St. Louis, Missouri.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM, Monday, May 7, 2007 at Covenant Presbyterian Church 4511 W. Wedington Drive in Fayetteville, with Reverend Paul Sagan officiating.
