Marjorie Zinke's Obituary
Marjorie Lois Zinke passed away on May 6, 2024, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 15, 1928, to Margaret and John Nowakowsky. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 68 years, Otto Henry Zinke, and her two sons, Otto Henry Zinke III and Frank Van Cleave Zinke.
Marjorie was educated in the public schools of St. Louis. She attended Washington University of St. Louis and graduated with an AB with a major in art history in 1956. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. As a playground supervisor in St. Louis, she was able to work her way through college. She was an accomplished swimmer and swam in the water ballet at Washington University. She received her MA in Archaeology from the University of Arkansas in 1975 with a thesis on precontact pottery. As a result, she supervised an archaeology dig at Marked Tree, Arkansas, and taught correspondence courses at the U of A.
She subsequently worked for the Arkansas Department of Health, monitoring contracts with nonprofit organizations. Her success can be measured by upon retirement she was asked to be on the board of several nonprofit organizations she monitored. She served for years on the board for Ozark Guidance, and as board chair for two terms for the Arkansas Support Network.
Marjorie enjoyed hiking and backpacking with her husband, particularly in the front range of the Rockies. She was also an avid reader.
She is survived by her daughter Laura G. Wolf, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
