"Aunt Mary" was my mother's closest friend the whole time they lived in South Orange. When I was growing up Mary was at every holiday celebration and I think that she saw or spoke to my mother every day. Mary was always a person of wisdom, good humor, refinement, patience, and compassion. At family gatherings she would often be present and she would provide my father with a highly esteemed debating partner for talk about current events and politics. She and Manny were almost always together. Mary also happened to be my kindergarten teacher, and the kindergarten teacher of seemingly everyone I knew growing up. She was very proud of her roots in Arkansas and her mother made several visits to South Orange when I was growing up. She was an elder in her Presbyterian Church and helped start an interfaith network of congregations that would take turns providing meals or a place to sleep for the homeless. We will miss her very much and our thoughts are with her extended family.
