Mary Alice Schumacher's Obituary
Mary Alice Schumacher, age 101, of Fayetteville, AR, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 5, 2020. She was born July 24, 1919 in Kansas City, MO to Paul and Abigail Matchette. She was preceded in death by her husband George Schumacher and two siblings. Raised in Kansas
City, Mary Alice became an accomplished ballerina and had early aspirations to be a part of the New York Rockettes before attending Kansas State University in 1937.
At Kansas State, she was admitted to the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she was a lifelong loyal member. While attending, she met George Schumacher and married during the war years in 1944.
George and Mary Alice moved to Great Bend, Kansas where she was able to fulfill her greatest desire and that was to be a mother to Martha Ann, Doug and Peggy. While in Great Bend she worked as a pediatric nurse and together with some other nurses, established a family planning clinic. In order to fulfill her civic responsibilities, she was elected as the first woman to the Great Bend School Board and was active with the Republican Women. In addition, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she made certain her children attended regularly.
She is survived by her two daughters, Peggy of Springdale, AR and Martha Ann and her husband Meir Shillor, of Auburn Hills, MI; one son, Doug and wife Ellen of Siloam Springs, AR; two grandchildren, Sara of London, England and Andrew and wife Heather of Bartlesville, OK and three great- grandchildren, Georgia, Naomi, and Hunter of Bartlesville, OK.
A memorial service will be held at 11am September 7, 2020 in Moore's Chapel , Fayetteville, AR.
