Mattie Faye Green's Obituary
Mattie Faye Green, age 90, of Fayetteville passed away Monday, July 10, 2023. She was born July 20, 1932, in Laneburg, Arkansas to Wilburn and Rosie Alford Clark. She was a lifelong Methodist. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joel William Green Sr.; her daughter Regina King and her eight siblings.
Mattie was a homemaker…but don’t stop reading yet. Mattie was also a bank teller in the shadow of the Superstition Mountains, an underage bartender in her older sister’s restaurant, and a prolific big-fish catcher. Mattie never met a stranger. As recently as last month she was befriending every bank teller at the Arvest on Wedington, wheeling and dealing with nurses in her doctor’s offices, and rolling silverware and causing good trouble at her church’s weekly community meal. Mattie seemed almost prescient in her ability to enter a room and know everyone’s business, often before they did.
She loved fiercely, on her on terms. If you were in the hospital, she was at your bedside. If you came after someone she loved, she didn’t hesitate jumping into the fray. She reveled in telling stories of the ‘haints and boogers’ in Southwest Arkansas, developing a life-long appreciation of the horror genre among multiple generations.
Most of all she was a twin to Hattie, who she loved to one-up, with love, whenever she could. A mother to Joel and Regina, of whom she was fiercely proud. An aunt and grandmother to a brood of people on whom she loved to dote. And a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, unafraid to embrace the challenge of loving all people, no matter who they were.
She will be deeply missed by friends and family far and wide.
She is survived by her son, Joel Green Jr. (Dyanna) of Springdale; sister, Hattie Raye Phipps of Longview, Texas; five grandchildren, Reverend Will Green (Dylan), Kate Alford (Peter), Bob Alexander, Kyle Green and Todd Wilkerson; six great grandchildren, McKenzie Rose Oxford, Berkleigh James Oxford, Harper Mae Oxford, Arden Leo Green, Myles Alexander and Elyzabelle Alexander.
Visitation will be 9:00 am – 10:00 am Thursday July 13, 2023 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. Funeral service will be 10:00 am following the visitation with a private interment to follow in the Fayetteville National Cemetery under the direction of Moore’s Chapel in Fayetteville.
