We are so sorry to hear the news. Mayme and Bennett was, is, wil be, always in our minds . From Karamay, China and now in Canton, Joy， Richard, and Clint (our son's name to memorize Bennett and Mayme, they always say us about clint)

We met Mayme and their family members over twenty years ago . we always remember all of them.
Our son has studied in UCLA since last Sep and we are planing to pay a visit to Mayme this Summer or later. But now we are so sad

I was terrified to take Mrs. Strange's English IV (Literature) class my senior year at MHS. For whatever reason, there was a schedule mix-up, and we had to take a semester of English IV (Grammar/Senior Term Paper) with another teacher and English IV (Literature) with Mrs. Strange. Grammar and writing were always my thing; reading and "interpreting" literature, not so much. But there I was...with the most experienced teacher at our school. Mind you...she had also taught my mother.

Expecting the worst, I was quickly surprised by my experience. I didn't have to read silently and answer questions for homework. Mrs. Strange pulled me into her lure by reading the story aloud "IN CHARACTER." By the time the bell rang, we'd have to read the rest at home. But we were all on the edge of our seats. We were reading . . . but felt like we were watching a movie at the same time. I couldn't wait to get home and finish the story.

When we returned to class, we talked about our interpretations. Mrs. Strange was so excited about our perspective. No one was wrong, yet she offered us further insight. The first test...I was afraid to look. To my surprise, it was a 98%. The rest is history. I went on to Northwestern State University and majored in English (with an emphasis in Writing). I even called Mrs. Strange a few times to get her perspective on some of my assignments. Her insight was always so valuable, and I cherish it to this day.

Though I too was an English teacher for a short while in my 20s, it would be almost 30 years before I would put my writing in the place it was intended to be. Now, because of my grandmother's love for stories and poetry and my English IV (Literature) teacher, Mrs. Strange (who were both originally from Mississippi), I'm an award-winning children's book author. Both of their names are acknowledged in my first book. So, for years to come, others will know their impact.

I have two memories of your mom. I was driving behind her one morning on the way to school and she was forced to brake suddenly and I tapped her bumper with my 1967 yellow Mustang with four on the floor. She was very gracious as no harm was done. My second memory involves our required dramatic reading in speech class. I chose the pivotal scene following the disastrous party entrance in Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca. When I finished she said I went a little over the time limit, but she couldn’t stop me because everyone was so captivated by the story. It is one of my favorite movies and every time I watch it I think of reading that scene in class. Prayers to all as you grieve her passing.

Mayme was a teacher through and through. Even long after she retired, she never stopped teaching. One of my favorite things about her was how she handed out pencils for every single holiday, no matter how small. I still haven’t run out of her pencils to this day, and each one reminds me of her.

She taught us how to make string art with just our fingers—turning something simple into something fun. And every New Year, without fail, she’d tell us what Chinese zodiac year we were in.

Typing was always a struggle for me—a real mental block. But Mayme said she could teach anyone to type. She gave it her best shot, but eventually had to laugh and admit she’d met her match.

She had a special way of looking at life and will be deeply missed.

Mrs. Strange will always hold a special place in my heart. She was a fierce ball of oddity, charisma and grace. I count myself luck to have had her as a teacher and friend.
