Michael Johnston Carey's Obituary
Michael Johnston Carey, 53, of Fayetteville passed away on Sept. 22, 2021. He suffered a heart attack after a difficult few weeks following a stroke. Also known as MC Hammer, Toney and Scary Carey, he was no doubt put on this earth to make people laugh. His wit and good humor were effortless and cherished by all who knew him.
He was born July 15, 1968 in New York City, New York to Robert and Judy Carey. He was a 1986 graduate of Fayetteville High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1992. Mike was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Many know him from his legendary Hoffbrau restaurant days or from working at Subaru and, most recently, Lowe’s. All know him for his stand up comedian acts whether at work or play. He was a Hog fan and bonfire pyromaniac. He loved music, was known for his movie reviews and podcast suggestions.
Mike is survived by his wife Kelley and daughter Madison. He was a devoted husband prone to karaoke and late night dance parties in the couples living room at Kelley’s request. He loved his daughter fiercely and supported her, her friends and her crew of theatre friends in their dreams for life.
He is also survived by his mother Judy Carey, for whom he was a steadfast caregiver, his brother Jimmy Carey (Reina), brother-in-law David Means (Chandra), brother-in-law Brian Means (Christa), and several nieces and nephews, two wonderful dogs (Howard and Lola), and a tight group of loyal friends. He is predeceased by his father Robert “Bob” Carey.
Mike was a good man lost way too early. His hearty laugh and supremely charming charisma will be missed. To honor him and in lieu of a funeral, the family will hold a Celebration of Life at 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2 at Mermaid’s in Fayetteville, AR. Memorials may be sent to the family at https://gofund.me/cf4693a9.
