Mildred L. Kyle's Obituary
On October 22, 2003 Mildred L. Kyle of Fayetteville, AR died quietly at Butterfield Trail Village. She was 96. Mrs. Kyle leaves three children, Joseph D. Kyle of Ashland, VA, James T. Kyle (and his partner Mark Leggett) of Sarasota, FL, and John E. Kyle (and his partner Peter Satten) of Baltimore, MD. There are four grandchildren, Alexander B. Kyle of Arlington, VA, Christopher A. Kyle of Nyack, NY, Benjamin J. Kyle of San Francisco, CA and Joshua M. Kyle of Indianapolis, IN and three great-grandchildren, William H. and Margaret H. of Nyack, NY and Joshua M. II of Indianapolis, IN. Her husband of 64 years predeceased Mrs. Kyle in January 1998.
Mildred Lois Johnson was born August 3, 1907 in Austin, TX, the seventh of nine children born to Jefferson Davis Johnson and Mittie Unis Lee Johnson. Mrs. Kyle grew up in Chickasha, OK and graduated from Chickasha High School in 1925. In 1930 she graduated from Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, now the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). After brief service as a schoolteacher, in 1932 Mrs. Kyle went to visit her older brother Harold in Cincinnati, OH where he was employed by the Gulf Refining Company.
In Cincinnati, Mrs. Kyle met her brother's assistant, John K. Kyle, and she never went home. The couple was married at the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi (Cincinnati) on May 23, 1933. The Kyles put down roots in the Fernbank section of Cincinnati where they raised their three children, Joseph (1935), James (1937) and John (1945). Mrs. Kyle was active in the Delhi Presbyterian Church, in the Sayler Park Parent Teacher Association and several local literary societies.
In 1962 Mr. Kyle was transferred to the Gulf Refining Company's Harmarville, PA research laboratory near Pittsburgh and he retired from that position in 1972. Upon his retirement, Mr. & Mrs. Kyle moved to Fayetteville. For many years they lived on Brent Lane in Fayetteville, and later resided in Butterfield Trail Village. Since the move to Arkansas, Mrs. Kyle has been an active and supportive member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, AR. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends in the church and the community.
Mrs. Kyle was cremated and a memorial service will be held at First United Presbyterian Church on a date not yet determined. Please watch for an announcement. Interment will be in the family plot in Woodland Cemetery in Xenia, OH. Memorials may be given to the Mildred L. Kyle Scholarship Fund, c/o USAO Foundation, 1727 W. Alabama, Chickasha, OK 73018.
