When my son Jack (one of Grandma’s great grandchildren) was 14, he and I went down to NW Arkansas for some mountain biking together and we stayed with Grandma. She was 99 at the time and of course, still living on her own. In the morning she made eggs and bacon for the three of us and offered to make pancakes too. Jack took her up on it. I marveled as she went right to it, making the pancakes from scratch, no recipe in sight. I said something to her about it, thinking to myself how I’ve made pancakes for over twenty years, but always have to pull out the recipe to do it! When I asked her how she does that so easily without a recipe, she just smiled and said, “Oh, it’s just a little of this and a little of that.” Jack said the pancakes were delicious.
I feel like I spent literally the entire summer at her house when I was growing up. There were many hours just hanging out with her and Poppy and of course walking back and forth to the city pool every day! One memory I laugh about now was the Christmas that each mother/daughter got matching dresses in velvet. I think she made them which made them very special but OMG I can’t even imagine that happening these days. Each family combo got a different color but they were all the same. After I moved to Texas we didn’t get to see her as much but there when the frequent phone calls began. Daily for my mom but I was looped in about once a week and she was always on top of the family news. She traveled to Texas in 2018 and 2019 for my kids’ weddings. When they started having kids we had great fin getting her a cookie cake to explain that she was going to become a Great Great Grandma (awesome play on words because I already thought she was Great!). It took a little bit for her to grasp the news and then she was thrilled. We made the trip for each one of them to meet her including the 2020 trip to surprise her with #2. She met 4 of the 5 and I know she is sharing memories of them with my mom right now.
Grandma would always invite me to come over to her house during my lunch break at work. She would fix a four course meal and then tell me to go lay down and take a quick nap on her couch before I had to go back to work. We had so many fun sleepovers. We would spend the night listening to The Beach Boys and coloring in coloring books. She made the best cinnamon rolls and fried chicken! She was the best grandma and Gaga. So incredibly blessed to have her by my side for 37 years. Can’t wait to see you again! I know you’ll be watching over us until we meet again.
She was the best and she did dearly love her family. One memory was her getting me a comb that was shaped like a chocolate bar with a bite out of it. Love you Aunt Nadine and rest easy you have earned it.
