It is my desire to tender my sincerest sympathy to Tal, Katy, Matt and Sam and the extended family of Laverne Nelson, for their present loss. I’ve been friends with and hold nothing but admiration and very warm feelings for Laverne and Tal. My family and I have spent many a Sunday evening in their always welcoming and warm home, enjoying communion among friends and an always impressive table set and served by Laverne. More times than not the meals came from their ever-present vegetable garden. I can still hear our children laughing in the family room as they watched Monty Python as we covered all the then current events.
Laverne was such a lovely, gifted lady and dedicated wife and mother. The distance between a frown and a warm engaging smile could only be measured in Nano seconds. Her sense of humor and radiant smile was quite infectious. Laverne was a really gifted artist and this afternoon I spent some time marveling at an intricate pen and ink drawing that she did of my birthplace in which she captured not only the visual but also the spiritual aspects of the homestead.
Our families were members of First Baptist and I always enjoyed Tal and Laverne as a couple and for their individual merits. Quite honestly, I loved them as I would a sister and brother, which indeed in the faith they were. I particularly loved the fact that they had a liberal bent, as with myself, in a congregation that tended to be a bit more conservative.
Laverne was a true friend and her absence will leave a void in so many lives. But, we of the faith know that it will only be a short time before we see Laverne again and you know, she’ll most likely have a warm meal waiting for us—all prepared with that most pleasant smile of hers. May God bless you, Tal, Katy, Matt and Sam in your time of trial.

I'm grateful for having met Laverne, and I cherish the watercolor she gave me. The photo and tribute capture her beautifully. I'm so very saddened to hear of her passing, and will keep Tal in mind in the coming days.

Laverne and I spent many happy hours painting, driving countryside and in Sunday School events. She is greatly missed. Karolyn Farrell
