Melissa, I don't know if you remember me. I used to babysit you years ago.
I'm so sorry to hear about Harwood. He was one of the funniest people that I have ever met.. When we got our boat, your dad helped us figure it out by reading a book on how to ski.. Then he tied the ski rope to the tree so that we could practice! My brother Jack got up the first time in the water! It took me longer. We still talk about him and your mother. He had a lot of sayings at the lake that we still use. Anyway, let me know how you are doing.. I would love to see pictures of you and your two daughters!
I have three grandchildren.
Jack is living in Lamar (outside of Clarksville, Ar.) He is still quite the clown and funny! He now has five grand children. Hope to hear from you..

Harwood: You were one of a kind. Your friendship meant so much to us. We enjoyed our visits to your house in Hot Springs back in the 80's and 90's. Your hospitality was always a high spot for our visits, and of course, your keen wit and dry humor.
I'm so sorry I didn't get to visit you in Fayetteville, I'm so sorry you had such a terrible time healthwise. The last conversation was a conference call with Bill Pope sometime in January, I think.

Thanks, also, Gene, for giving me my nickname, "Quailhead" which some of my friends (old ones, that is) still call me today. Our thoughts and prayers are still going out to Ila, and of course to your daughter and family. We'll miss you, old buddy, in fact we miss you right now. May we greet each other in the hereafter. I was a friend of both Ila and Gene's for Years and years and supplied with a vinyard to come and pick muscadines. My favorite memory is 34 weeks of Disciple Bible Study that allowed Gene to display the tremendous homework he had done in understanding our Creator.
He was a man's man and touched the lives of people where he will live on forever and ever.

Dear Melissa:
I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the memorial service, as I will be out of town on Saturday.

I first got to know your dad when both of us were visiting Mrs. Clydia Tucker, who was then in a nursing home here in Hot Springs. As you probably know Mrs. Tucker had been am employee at the Rehab. Center and Gene was so faithful in to see her each week over the five years she lived at the home.

Gene loved history, and so, that is what we often talked about when I visited him here in H. S. during his stays in the hospital.

Your dad was a kind, good Christian man and I was happy to have known him and to have been his friend.

Melissa and Mrs. Harwood,
Wish we could come to the service but I have to work and mom's not well enough to go either. Our prayers and sympathy are certainly with you all during this sorrowful time. I have many wonderful memories from the years we were neighbors on South Boston in Fort Smith. Melissa, I haven't seen you in forty some odd years but in some ways it only seems like yesterday that you and me and Debbie Manchaca were out in the yard playing. Anyway, Mr. Harwood was as good and decent a man as I've ever known and he will surely be greatly missed by many.

I didn't know Harwood that long. He was such a wonderful man. Every morning he would come into breakfast with the newspaper in his hand and ask for a cup of coffee. He would talk to his table about the games that were on the night before and see what they thought. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I know that he is in a better place and he is up in heaven telling jokes and talking about the games from the night before. Thank you for sharing your father, grandfather , and husband with us. He will never be forgotten.

Gene and Ila were college friends of my Uncle and Aunt, Wilson and Betty Sue Kell. When I moved to Hot Springs to attend ASMS, Gene and Ila took me to church at First United Methodist and helped me to become a part of that church family. I'll never forget their care and generosity. My family and I will miss you, Harwood.
