Robert Clyde Mayes' Obituary
Robert C. Mayes, age 96, of Fayetteville, AR, went to Heaven on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. He was born on October 28, 1926 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Martha Ann and Ivan McKinley Mayes. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Bill and Tom, and two sisters, Betty and Mary Jo.
He married his amazing sweetheart Juanita Maxine Epperson to whom he was married for over 74 years. He was an incredible husband and he was an amazing Dad to his five sons. He is survived by his wife Maxine of the home and his five sons and their families. Bob and Sheila Mayes of Huntsville; Bill and Maeva Mayes of Huntsville; Steve Mayes of Nob Hill; Ben and Sue Mayes of Fayetteville; Jim and Linda Mayes of Huntsville. He was a wonderful Grandad and Great Grandad as well. He is survived by 11 Grandchildren, Billy and Amanda Mayes, Leslie and James Bullard, Matt and Heather Mayes, Staci and Nathan Bodenstein, Ivan and Kayla Mayes, Iris and Erik Jakobs, Brad and Hope Mayes, Ashley Mayes, Jimmy and Dani Mayes, India Mayes, Sam and Kara Mayes, and 14 Great Grandchildren.
Bob graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1944. He served in the US Army Air Force for two years and received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He worked diligently for the US Post Office for over 37 years - retiring as the Assistant Postmaster in Fayetteville. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fayetteville where he often volunteered and served. He loved and served his Family and he loved and served people. He was an outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was found of working in his very fruitful garden and loved collecting stamps. He was absolutely a loyal and dedicated Arkansas Razorback fan. He greatly enjoyed coaching youth baseball for his sons and others; and he led Troop 104 Boy Scouts for his sons. He volunteered for many years at Washington Regional Hospital. He was a mentor to many and a kind and hardworking example for all.
He will be greatly missed by his 44 family members and his many friends.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, at Nelson Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Visitation is from 4-6 p.m. Monday, December 12, at Nelson Berna. Burial with military honors will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, 20 Dickson Street, Fayetteville, AR, 72701.
