In Loving Memory of Ronald Konig

Some people leave behind accomplishments, while others leave behind something even greater, the gift of memories, laughter, and wisdom. Ronald Konig was one of those rare individuals.

Ronald had an incredible way of bringing the world to life through the stories he shared from his years as a geologist. Whether he was talking about the places he explored, the wonders hidden beneath the earth's surface, or the adventures that shaped his life, he had a way of captivating everyone around him. Listening to him was like taking a journey through time and nature itself.

But beyond his fascinating stories, what I will cherish most were the moments we shared together. We traded jokes, laughed until our faces hurt, and enjoyed conversations that made even ordinary days feel special. His sense of humor, warm spirit, and genuine kindness made it easy to smile whenever he was around.

Ronald's life was a testament to curiosity, adventure, and the joy of connecting with others. He touched lives not only through what he knew, but through the way he made people feel, welcomed, entertained, and appreciated.

Though he is no longer with us, his stories will continue to be told, his laughter will echo in our memories, and the impact he made on those who knew him will never fade.

Rest in peace, Ronald. Thank you for the stories, the laughs, and the friendship. You will forever be missed, but never forgotten.

When I interviewed for a faculty position in the department in 1996, I was in Dr. Konig's office in (then) Ozark Hall.When he told me he'd been on the faculty since 1959, I commented that was the year I was born. He muttered something about "whippersnapper" and we both had a good chuckle. He mentored my teaching in the high-enrollment physical geology course. I remain most appreciative and indebted to him for that. He was always supportive. I know the many thousands of students he taught at UARK would say the same. He was a good man and a friend. He loved his family and his summers at the lake in NY. May you find Peace.

I saw Dr. Konig’s obituary in the newspaper (Little Rock) and immediately thought of my son Brad. He graduated from the Geosciences Department in 2007. I sent him the notice and asked if he remembered him. He responded with a long text full of praise and respect for Dr. Konig. He indicated how grateful he was for the mentorship and guidance he provided over four years. I must say I’m somewhat surprised by the lack of remorse or condolences received for such a caring and dedicated educator. Brad’s final line in his response,,,’There’s no telling how many students he taught, mentored and made a lasting positive impact on.’
