SGT Arthur R. McGill's Obituary
Sgt. Arthur R. McGill, 26 of Gaston, South Carolina formerly of Gentry, Arkansas passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2005 while on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom III. He was born January 12, 1979 in Gravette, Arkansas to Robin Noah and Bette Louise (Guilliams) McGill.
After being raised by his aunt and uncle from the age of 13 he honorably served in the Arkansas National Guard for six years, Sgt. McGill joined the active component on the 23rd of November 2003, and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment (Battlekings), Fort Stewart, GA, where he served as an Ammunition Section Chief in Service Battery and later as an Ammunition Sergeant in Bravo Battery (Bulldogs). During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Sgt. McGill was instrumental in the training and preparation of the Battery's Soldiers improving the combat effectiveness of the unit as a whole.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC) the Army Achievement Medal (2 OLC), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (1 OLC), the National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), the Army Service Ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.
He is survived by his parents of Gentry, Arkansas, one daughter, Kaylee McGill of Gravette, Arkansas, aunt and uncle Ray and Jamie Gilstrap of Gaston, South Carolina, paternal grandmother, Fay Carter of Gentry, two brothers, Nathaniel Gilstrap of Gaston, South Carolina, Trey Schaefer of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and three sisters, ShyAnn Gilstrap, Valerie Gilstrap, and Allissa Schaefer all of Gaston, South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, July 28, 2005 in the Chapel of Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville with Chaplain (CPT.) Simons officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Fayetteville National Cemetery.
