Susannah Adair Handy Porter's Obituary
SUSANNAH PORTER
Susannah Adair Handy Porter, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, August 20, 2011 in Springdale.
She was born December 26, 1932 in Akron, Ohio the daughter of George Adair and Clementine Rogers Handy. Her husband, James Lee Porter and her parents preceded her in death.
She graduated from Fayetteville High School, attended the University of Arkansas and graduated with a BSE degree. Her campus sorority was Pi Beta Phi.
After graduation she taught 30 years in Southern California, where she met her husband, James L. Porter, a high school football and basketball coach and a counselor in El Segundo, CA.
In El Segundo, CA Seiko Time Corporation adopted her classroom for many years. She had developed a Career Program each spring. When she retired she continued the Adopt a Classroom School Program in the Arizona and Arkansas School Districts. After moving back to Fayetteville she volunteered at the Veterans Medical Center, the Cancer Support Home, Central United Methodist Church Community Meals, Cooperative Emergency Outreach, Fayetteville Public Library and read to first graders at Vandergriff School. She also received the Clark McClinton Service Above Self Award from the Fayetteville Rotary Club in 2008.
Her organizations were Washington Regional Medical Foundation, Daughters of American Revolution, Fayetteville Garden Club, Smart Cookie Book Club and NW Arkansas Rose Society. She was a Rosearian and won many awards for her beautiful roses. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She won several Blue Ribbons at the Washington County Fair. Susannah loved to dance at George’s on Friday nights. She loved her Yorkshire Terriers, Burgundy, Chardonnay, Gardenia Adair and Scarlett O’Hara, they were her life. In 1952 she joined Central United Methodist Church and was a member of Walking Through the Bible Class.
Susannah’s quote was “My life has been a Great Dance”.
Memorials may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones Rd., Springdale, AR 72762 or the Fayetteville Animal Shelter, 1640 S. Armstrong, Fayetteville, AR 72701.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 24 at the Fayetteville National Cemetery, under the direction of Moore’s Chapel.
