My first assignment after basic was Ramstein Air Base, Germany - I was assigned to the Einsiedlerhof Flight, heating shop. The first person I met was Vernon Gobble, in fact he picked me up at the airport. I was a young high spirited 18 year old. Vernon immediately took me under his wing - and I certainly needed that. He was a great mentor, friend, and when need be, a boss. He would invite us to his home (us being another young troop named Jeff Wilson and myself). He treated us like family, it was my first time away from home and I'm not sure how I would have handled being alone in a strange country for the first time. After Germany we didn't see each other again until Vernon started working in the 314th Civil Engineering Squadron, Little Rock AFB. It was a great reunion, I'll always remember those cycle rides on the fall days down Highway 107, but again, as Vernon moved on we lost touch. I cherish the memories of Germany and Highway 107. I thank "Gobb" for the memories and molding me into the person I am today. Rest in Peace My Friend - and from the bottom of my heart, Thank You for being you!

I remember when Uncle Vernon visited us in Stella. He took me for a ride on his motorcycle. We hit a little rock on the pavement and it made the back wheel swivel. I felt so grown up when he complimented me on my calmness during that and also being able to lean into the curves. I know he will be missed by all his family and loved ones
