Walter O. Mitchell known as “Spud” to family and friends, of Springdale, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 in Fayetteville. Spud was born March 8, 1941, in Prairie Grove, Arkansas to Olen and Clara Pool Mitchell. He grew up in West Fayetteville and graduated from Farmington High School. He attended Oklahoma State Tech. Spud was married to Janet Davis Mitchell for 51 years, was the parent of one son, Bradley Davis Mitchell and one daughter, Kristen Leigh Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by both parents and his step-father, Howard Helm.
Spud was a 37 year employee of AEP / SWEPCO, spending 25 of those years for the company in Greenwood, Arkansas before returning to the Fayetteville/Springdale area and retiring in 2000 as Service Supervisor and Contract Coordinator. He served on the South Sebastian County Fair Board, was the Vice-President of the Greenwood Housing Authority, and was a 32nd degree Master Mason, Greenwood Lodge #131. He served on the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Dept. for 24 years before retiring as Greenwood Fire Chief. Many dear friends and wonderful memories were made while living in Greenwood. Spud also served with the 142nd field artillery unit of the Arkansas National Guard.
Spud is survived by his wife Janet Mitchell of the home; son Bradley Davis Mitchell and his wife Tomoe of Springdale, Arkansas; daughter Kristen Mitchell Rogers and her husband Joe of Camden, Arkansas; sister Susie Todd of Springdale, Arkansas; brother-in-law John Paul Davis and wife Jane of Fayetteville, Arkansas; brother-in-law James Edward Davis of Springdale, Arkansas; sisters-in-law Joyce Ramey and her husband Warren of Keller, Texas and Jody Biggs and her husband James of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandchildren Allison Mitchell Davis and her husband Cody, Jake Rogers, Jonathan Mitchell, Eliza Mitchell Rogers, and Luke Rogers; 2 great grandchildren Emily Grace Davis and Ella Claire Davis; and many other family, friends, and loved ones.
Visitation will be 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, August 4th, at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home. Services will be Friday, August 5th, at 1:00 PM at Springdale United Methodist Church.
