Waymon Baker's Obituary
Waymon Baker was born in Hazel Valley, Arkansas on February 6th, 1924. His parents were Arvanah Arman and David Baker. He had seven brothers and was the last one surviving. His first wife, Helen Corrine Harris Baker, his daughter, Gwenda Ann Varner and a granddaughter, Christina Ann Lombard, preceded Waymon in death. His wife, Ruth Osburn Baker, of the home, and two daughters, Nell Waydine Skinner of Westville, Oklahoma and Jerilyn Sue Baker of Fayetteville, Arkansas, survive him. His eleven grandchildren, Noel Mourey, Gabriel, Richard and Joshua Anderson, Kelly Parish, Michael and Jeremiah Lombard, Jennifer Carr, Scotty Baker, Stephen and Amber Lowe, also survive him. His great-grandchildren are: Kristina, Annika, Alexis, Brandon, Trevor, Ryan, Kimberley, Hunter, Haley, Nickolas, Novelie, Katie, Olivia and Ava. His stepson, Jerry Shackleford of Fayetteville, Arkansas and two step-grand-sons, Jason and John Shackleford, also survive him.Waymon was a member of the Unity Covenant Church of West Fork, Arkansas and the West Fork Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid sportsman and fisherman and a loving family man who loved to spend time in the woods and fishing with his family and many, many friends.He served in the U.S. Army from February 23, 1944 until February 1, 1967 attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. During his career he served in the European Theater of Operations during World War 2 and then in the Korean Conflict. After retiring from a twenty two year career in the U.S. Army he then moved to West Fork Arkansas where he lived until October 2004 at which time he moved to Fayetteville Arkansas where he lived until his death.The viewing will be held at Nelson- Berna Funeral Home and Crematory of Fayetteville on May 11, 2007 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. with family receiving visitors from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held on May 12, 2007, 4:00 p.m. at Unity Covenant Church on Union Star road off of highway 170 in West Fork.
